Microalgae have been on Earth for billions of years. These organisms have honed adaptation and survival tools over the millennia as they encountered changing conditions. Haematococcus pluvialis, the strain of algae that produces TruAzta natural astaxanthin, generates astaxanthin as a natural defense mechanism in response to environmental stresses. Having had the ability to perfect this production over time, microalgae such as H. pluvials have become expert micro-production systems.

The result? The production of astaxanthin by H. pluvialis allows it to survive up to 40 years under conditions that would be otherwise inhospitable.


When Flamingos feed on these microalgae, not only do their feathers take on their striking red color, they become one of the longest-lived bird species.


Salmon, known for their incredible tenacity and strength, fuel up on astaxanthin-filled microalgae just prior to starting on their journey upstream to spawn.

H. pluvialis can be found in nature generating astaxanthin in rock water pools and puddles where the algae are stranded from the nutrients they require for growth. Our raceway ponds are giant versions of these puddles; fully exposed to the pristine Arizona sun. But we give nature a leg-up by enclosing these ponds in greenhouse-like structures. In this manner, we capture the streaming natural sunlight while maintaining our high culture purity standards. Astaxanthin production is stimulated with a lower risk of contamination.
